The U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark ruling last week extending workplace discrimination protections to LGBTQ employees could influence a sea change in where LGBTQ people decide to live, work, and buy homes, according to realtor.com®. Surveys show the LGBTQ community has tended to favor living in areas known explicitly for being gay-friendly. But now, with less fear of discrimination, their options for places to call home may open up.
Realtor.com®’s data team analyzed U.S. Census Bureau data from 2014 to 2018 to identify the places with the highest percentage of same-sex couples. Several smaller towns topped the list. While cities like San Francisco and New York are known for having vibrant gay communities, their overall population is so large that same-sex couples tend to comprise a smaller percentage. The following towns are the top towns for LGBTQ people, according to realtor.com® (which narrowed its list to one city per state for geographic diversity):
- Wilton Manors, Fla.: median home list price of $449,000
- Provincetown, Mass.: $759,050
- Palm Springs, Calif.: $489,050
- Sheridan, Colo.: $349,000
- Lewes, Del.: $399,050
- Nyack, N.Y.: $727,050
- Asbury Park, N.J.: $569,950
