The typical American dream home would cost $1.3 million, feature 7.5 rooms, and have an average square footage of 2,195 feet, according to a new survey of 2,000 homeowners by Northshore Fireplace. Sixty-four percent of Americans believe they’ll be able to obtain their dream home within their lifetime.
The most popular words used to describe a dream home from respondents were comfortable, cozy, and spacious.
The most important feature inside a dream home? A view with peace and quiet, according to the survey. The most desired luxuries for respondents were land and privacy.
There were some gender and generational differences for the ideal location of a perfect home. For example, males tended to say their dream home would be on the beach while females said their perfect home would be in the country. Among the generations, baby boomers preferred the beach; Generation X members the country; and millennials the suburbs.
They had differences on exterior and interior styles, too. Baby boomers said they preferred ranches and a traditionally styled home, while millennials and Gen Xers preferred modern styles.
The living room or family room may be the most important space in the house. Forty-six percent of respondents said they’d spend a majority of their time in their dream home’s living room or family room.
