Car lovers “want to jump in the car with their family or friends and go on scenic drives—and maybe some open spaces where they can kick up the turbo,” Tim Jackson, president of the Colorado Automobile Dealers Association, told realtor.com®. “Car lovers will gravitate to those cities that provide a good network of streets and roads. And they want to avoid intense congestion.”
Realtor.com® researchers looked at the best and worst urban areas for car lovers. To form its rankings, they factored in several criteria among the 100 largest U.S. housing markets, including the percentage of realtor.com® single-family home listings with a garage (and the percentage with a three-car garage or larger); rate of car ownership; average number of vehicles per household; traffic fatalities; and average annual auto insurance rate by state.
The top six best cities for car lovers are:
- Colorado Springs, Colo.
- Des Moines, Iowa
- Salt Lake City
- Richmond, Va.
- Dayton, Ohio
- Denver
On the flip side, the six worst cities for car lovers are:
- New York
- New Orleans
- San Francisco
- Miami
- Baton Rouge, La.
- Boston
