All baby boomers will be age 65 and above by 2029, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. At that point, more than 20 percent of the U.S. population will be over the traditional retirement age.
If you’re helping clients make decisions about homes that will meet their needs as they age, Hy-Lite, a U.S. Block Windows Company, has three suggestions for windows that will be suitable for homeowners aging in place.
Easy-to-operate windows. Easy-to-open slider windows that glide along a track are much easier on the back and joints than “push-and-pull” double- and single-hung windows. Windows that have simple, smooth cranks are another easy option.
Windows that offer privacy. There are several options today when it comes to privacy, including acrylic blocks with various patterns, decorative windows, and clings or film you can apply to the inside of the glass to create a frosted or patterned look. For those who want to go high-tech, smart glass technology can be controlled with a remote or smartphone app that can lighten or darken the tint of the window. Smart window films operate in a similar way and can even replace shades or blinds.
Low-maintenance window frames. Unlike wood frames that require sanding and repainting or that can rot out, vinyl frames are simple, easy to clean, and more energy efficient.
“Baby boomers can make positive changes to their current homes for long-term living,” says Roger Murphy, president of Hy-Lite. “Adding privacy windows is one of those changes. Existing hard-to-open windows can be replaced quickly by a contractor, making window operations simpler in the future.”
